First Mile delivers wireless broadband at up to 129 times T1 line speed

ATLANTA—Not so long ago, a T1 broadband connection satisfied most businesses, but that has quickly changed, says Stan Allen, CEO of First Mile, which sells its wireless broadband services at speeds up to 129 times that of T1 lines to business tenants of commercial buildings.

First Mile is one of 40 innovative technology companies that will present at the second annual Southeast Venture Conference in Tysons Corner, VA, Feb. 27-28. (For more information on the conference, see: www.seventure.org).

Founded in 2005, the six-employee company raised about $3 million from individual investors. It plans to seek a $10 million to $15 million round shortly. It’s currently hiring people in sales and technology.

“Not long ago, T1 was a lot of bandwidth, but today even small firms like to have 3 megabits per second to 10mbs,” Allen tells TechJournal South.

Uses licensed spectrum<
First Mile uses licensed spectrum RF technology to push data at lightening fast speeds over a line-of-sight path from a building serviced to its hub sites via a small radio antenna on the building and a hub site antenna.

The company offers only point-to-point broadband wireless over secure, licensed spectrum, not public air such as WiFi or WiMax. It guarantees 99.999 percent reliability, boosting its signal during foul weather to maintain service.

In Atlanta, it has a significant relationship with Southern Company and its subsidiary Southern Telecom. First Mile has a hub site on the Georgia Power building that affords access to Southern Telecom’s fiber optic network.

Allen says First Mile’s service has several advantages over fiber optic hookups. “We are wireless and that’s a benefit because we don’t come in through the same conduits fiber providers do. That provides a level of diversity for the customer,” Allen notes.

“We also believe these wireless links are more cost effective and reliable than land-based. So we can sell at a discount under our competitors.”
The company started marketing last summer and has customers numbering in the low double-digits, primarily white-collar professional services firms such as law, PR and Web development, and radiology imaging services.

It provides anywhere from 3mbs to 200mbs services, with the average customer buying in the 15mbs range.

The service costs from $250 a month for 3mbs standby for use as a backup to other providers (which incurs additional charges when used) to up to $2,995 a month for a one-year term of 100mbs service.

Currently operating in Atlanta, the company is preparing to rollout service in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, and Houston, then other Southeast markets in the second and third quarters this year.

Allen, who started a number of telecom companies going back to the early 1990s, admits, “It’s been a roller-coaster ride. There’s a lot of truth to the saying that the last man standing benefits. It feels as if things are coming back, particularly in the wireless space. There’s plenty of fiber for long haul but the local loop is still a bottleneck, with fewer alternatives for access in buildings.”

Mempercepat modem

Cara Pertama

1. Dari Control Panel, klik icon Modem.
2. Pada kotak dialog Modem Properties, pilih modem yang akan diubah settingnya dan
klik pada tombol Properties
3. Pada tab General, ubah Maximum Speed menjadi 115200.
4. Pindah ke tab Connection dan klik tombol Port Setting.
5. Dari kotak dialog Advanced Port Setting, beri tanda check pada Use FIFO
buffers. Kemudian ubah Receive Buffer menjadi 14 dan Transmit Buffer menjadi
16. Lalu klik OK.
6. Klik button Advanced, beri tanda check pada Use Flow Control. Kemudian pilih
radio button Hardware. Pada bagian Extra Setting, isi dengan &C1&D2E1Q0V1X4%C0
S7=55 S11=55 S0=0.

Cara Kedua
1. Dari Control Panel, klik icon System.
2. Pindah ke tab Device Manager.
3. Pada bagian Ports (COM & LPT), pilih port yang digunakan oleh modem Anda dan klik tombol Properties.
4. Pindah ke tab Port Settings.
5. Pada bagian Bits per second, isi dengan 921600.

Cara Ketiga

1. Buka file system.ini yang terletak di C:\Windows.
2. Pada bagian [386Enh], tambahkan dengan COM1Buffer=16384. Ubah COM1 dengan port yang digunakan oleh modem.

META SEARCHING

THE GOOD, THE BAD, & THE UGLY

Meta Search - A search tool that queries several search engines and/or web directories simultaneously and returning the results in a single merged list without the duplicate links.
Confused? Let me give you an example. Let's say there is a meta search engine you have recently found that searchs two engines, say Google and Yahoo. It searches bothof these search engines and then returns the combined results to you, without any duplicates (results that appear on both engines). Sounds neat , huh? Well, there are pros and cons with meta searching that the user should be aware of in order to make his searching as productive as possible.

THE PROS

Meta searching is fast, and saves considerable time for the user since you may query several engines and directories simultaneously rather than typing in a single query in every search engine that you wish to get results. Webmasters will find meta searching extremely valuable in checking their site's page listings, backlinks, keyword ranking, etc. Any other profession that is research-oriented would also find meta searching a must-have.


THE CONS

Most, not all, meta searchers do not allow site submissions. This is because most do not maintain their own database of page listings. They simply get results from other search engines. Because most meta searchers query anywhere from 4 to 12 engines and directories simultaneously, and not all of them will allow Boolean searching, many meta searchers therefore will not allow Boolean searching. (Boolean seaching is the use of operators such as AND, OR, quotation marks, and plus/minus symbols.)

THE META SEARCH ENGINES

Meta search engines come in a variety of forms. The standard meta searcher simply queries several engines and returns the results on a single page. Others return results from each engine queried separately, either dividing them on a single page or opening multiple
browser windows, each containing the results from a different engine. And another type, generally known as all-in-one search, also allows you to query many different engines, but just one engine at a time.

I don't know about you, but when I first entered the world of internet marketing I thought I could just submit my newly finished website to a few search engines, then sit back as the visitors flocked to my site.

I imagined that people would arrive on my website, as if by magic, purchase goods, and perhaps come back again for more.

(1)Writing Articles

Writing an article on a subject related to your website and getting that article published has two major benefits:

- People who are interested in your article will read it and often click on the URL in your resource box find out more. This gets you another free targeted visitor. Targeted, because that reader wants to find out more on the subject of your article, which is hopefully related to the subject of your website.

- Every publisher of your article must also publish your "resource box". Adding a resource box with your URL to all of your articles will increase the number of links leading back to your website, which in turn helps to increase your search engine position

(2)Forum Networking

There are many discussion forums on the internet, on every topic you could possibly imagine.

Most discussion boards allow posters to attach a "Signature" with their post containing additional information about themselves, such as their name, URL and sometimes even an advertisement.

By visiting a few forums regularly and participating in the discussions, asking and answering questions, you can build up trust with other forum members, whilst at the same time getting free exposure for your website.

Just try to make a useful contribution to the forum - be sure to read the forum rules and don't spam!

(3)Reciprocal Linking Website Traffic

Reciprocal linking has two main benefits for you.

Firstly, the more links that you exchange, the more chance there is that someone will follow a link from another site and land on your website.

Secondly, your website will be perceived more importantly by search engines.

The more links you have from other sites, the greater your chance of getter ranked more highly by all the search engines.

Here are some Dos and Don'ts to help you get more out of your link exchanges.

- Do link with sites that will be of interest to your visitors.

- Don't link with pages that have unorganised link directories with hundreds of links on each page. This won't benefit you with increased traffic or search engine rankings.

- Do link with sites that have a clearly labelled "Link Directory" from their main page. You aren't likely to get much traffic from a hidden or hard to find link directory.

- Don't use link farms or FFA pages. You are unlikely to get extra traffic using these methods and the search engines may penalise you.

- Do use link directories to help you find link partners. You can find some Link Exchange Resources here

- Do stay organised. Use link exchange software, or a spreadsheet to keep track of the link exchanges you have requested and the contact details of the webmasters.

(4) Email Signatures

This is a very simple, but often forgotten way of increasing your website visitors.

Most of us are sending lots of emails a day, but many of us just sign them with just our name, or perhaps nothing at all.

Instead, why not end your emails with a short signature containing your name, a bit about your website along with the URL?

Keep the signature short (4 lines), to the point and avoid hype or SHOUTING.

You may be surprised at the extra visitors you receive through doing this. It's amazing how curiosity will lead the recipients of your email to click on your link!


(5)Using Traffic Exchanges

Finally, this is one easy way to guarantee instant hits to your website. You can build up credits for free by surfing or building up a downline to surf for you.

The downside of this method is that the visitors you receive from traffic exchanges are not as targeted as the visitors that you will receive via the other methods that I have described.

The reason for this is that people surf traffic exchanges for one reason - to earn as many credits as possible in as short a space of time as possible!

This gives you a challenge - how do you attract the attention of someone who is looking at your web page for 20 seconds or less?

Here are two tips -

- Know your market - spend some time surfing on the exchange that you are advertising on and pay attention to the types of web pages being advertised. Make sure that the pages you advertise are going to interest your target market.

- Use a short, simple attention grabbing page that can be read in a few seconds - there is no point advertising a huge page of text that takes 5 minutes to read. The chances are, your visitor will get bored and click on the "next" button without giving your page a fair chance.

Regularly invest some time in each of these 5 traffic generating methods and you will see your web statistics moving in the upwards direction before you know it.
